How to check missing variation parents in a WooCommerce CSV

Understand blank parent references, parents outside the file and variation attribute mismatches.

A variation needs a parent reference

For a record with Type = variation, the Parent field should identify the parent by SKU, such as TEE, or by an existing product ID with the prefix, such as id:100. A blank Parent is an error in HassleKit.

Example relationship

The parent has Type = variable, SKU = TEE and Size values S, M. Its small variation has SKU = TEE-S, Parent = TEE and Size value S. The parent and variation attribute names should match.

A parent outside the CSV may be valid

Parent not in file is a warning, not proof that the relationship is broken. A variation-only import can refer to a parent already in the store. Confirm the parent’s SKU or existing ID in WooCommerce. HassleKit has no store access and cannot confirm it for you.

Review ambiguous references and attributes

If several records match the parent identifier, resolve the duplicate identifiers first. If the parent is in the file, the checker can compare attribute names and selected options. A mismatch might be a typo or an incomplete parent export; review the actual product configuration before changing it.

Order and importer version matter

Place parent rows before their variations when possible. Conversion from simple to variable products and adding variations during updates depend on WooCommerce version and import settings. Follow the official importer documentation for your workflow and test on staging.

Use the report

  1. Load the CSV and check that variation checks are available.
  2. Filter the relevant parent or attribute issue group.
  3. Search by product name, SKU or ID.
  4. Correct confirmed problems in a copy, rerun the checker and inspect a small test import.

Try the checker without your catalog

Open the checker and choose a clean example or an example with issues. Analysis stays in your browser.
